Automobile Ratings: What Green Ratings Mean for Your Next Automobile

The Green Automobile Ratings measure a car's earth friendliness on a scale from 1 to 100. The “greener” or more environmentally friendly a vehicle is, the higher its green rating will be. The Green Rating system was developed by Environmental Defense, a nonprofit organization devoted to protect the planet.

Green Rating Measurement Categories

The Green Automobile Ratings system judges vehicles based on the amount of smog or pollution they emit, the fuel consumed and the pollution caused by its manufacturing. While most consumers may just look at fuel economy, the Green Ratings system also takes into consideration secondary factors like manufacturing and tailpipe emissions.

Major Pollutants Measured in the Ratings System

This popular environmental ratings system does an objective and quantitative comparison of each vehicle's pollutant emissions. These pollutants include nitrogen oxides, carbon monoxides, hydrocarbons, greenhouse gases and fine particles.

All these pollutants are emitted either through the tailpipe of the vehicle, its production and manufacturing or in the production and distribution of the fuel required to run the car.

This rating system is unique because it not only takes into consideration the greenhouses gases that a vehicle emits, but also its affect on human health.

For example, nitrogen oxides and hydrocarbons can be very harmful to human health, but have little impact on the environment.

Data Used to Develop Ratings

The pollution data used to create the Green Ratings system derives from fuel economy and emissions information directly from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the car's weight. Because all vehicles must be tested for fuel economy and emissions before they can be released, this data is considered to be the most accurate.

Who Uses the Green Ratings System?

The Green Automobile Ratings System is most used by the popular Yahoo! Autos site (http://autos.yahoo.com), but is also in use by Environmental Defense and other environmental organizations who release “green car” reports.
