Cadillac - Lowrider Definition

A lowrider is a vehicle that has a modified suspension system, usually through hydraulic suspension. This is done so the car rides low to the ground, giving it a low profile and is often a major part of “cruising” culture.

The practice was started in the 1940s in Southern California and was a major part of Chicano culture. However, since the early 1990s, the prevalence of lowrider cars has increased substantially in urban environments and is particularly popular amongst the West Coast hip hop community.

Today, lowriding is about more than simply lowering the car and often involves extensive restoration and customization.

Cadillac Coupe deVille

The Cadillac Coupe deVille was manufactured from 1949 through to 1993. The infamous car is a pop culture icon and the most popular conversion automobile for low rider customization. However, after 1985 the car was significantly downsized both in terms of length and motor size. As a result, most low rider builders look for deVille models that were built before 1985.

Cadillac Brougham

With its rear wheel drive, the Cadillac Fleetwood Brougham was known for its comfort and handling. The car was Cadillac's largest four-door sedan from 1972 until 1986 and though the Brougham model name has been used since 1916, the Brougham line is considered to have run from 1975 to 1992.

In 1987, the Fleetwood Brougham became simply the “Brougham” was a rival to Lincoln's popular Town Car and was often used as the basis for many stretch limousines, which were built on the Brougham architecture.
