If you're concerned about automobile safety and vehicle tracking GPS technology, keep reading for an overview of tracking services, accident assistance programs and driver safety technology.

With features like protecting your vehicle against theft, helping you track down a lost or stolen vehicle, notifying authorities in case of an accident or carjacking or even offering simple directions when needed, vehicle tracking systems can save your time, money and life.

Read on for a review and overview of some of the most popular vehicle tracking GPS systems:

General Motors and OnStar

The OnStar service offered by General Motors on its vehicles connects a car and its driver to the outside world through satellite technology. Using an OnStar button, drivers can contact a call center for help with directions or in case of emergencies.

The OnStar service is a subscription service and currently has over 5 million subscribers across the United States and Canada.

Despite its popularity and notoriety, the OnStar service focuses predominantly on security and safety. OnStar offers no add-on features like the ability to sync up with your music player, phone or other digital audio devices.

Ford and SmartAlert

In an effort to compete with GM's telematic offerings, Ford introduced both SmartAlert and the Sync options. SmartAlert works by using GPS technology to locate a vehicle and can then send that location to the Internet through nearby cellular networks.

Another great feature of SmartAlert is the ability to remotely unlock your car doors in case you lock your keys inside. One call to the SmartAlert call center or even clicking online and entering your access code and you can automatically unlock your car doors.

The other feature included with the SmartAlert vehicle tracking GPS system is Sync, Ford's infotainment package created in conjunction with Microsoft. Basically, Sync allows drivers to control their phones and music players using voice commands.

Mercedes Hughes Telematics

Seen as a luxury provider of telematics services and vehicle tracking GPS technology, Hughes Telematics is the provider chosen by companies like Mercedes. They also offer models that can be installed and connected to any vehicle, regardless of make or model.
